OLYMPIA (VIDEO) —The City of Olympia has given notice to homeless campers living in a fragile area under the 4th Avenue bridge that they will be removed.
City officials say they plan to fence off sensitive areas to keep damaging activity from happening there. They say the city’s long-term intent is to remove the camp.
City staff placed portable toilets at the site last Friday to control human waste that could threaten water quality on the west side of Budd Bay. Garbage pickups at the site is underway this week.
City officials say the actions are short-term, interim measures to address the health and safety concerns of the community, city and state Department of Ecology.
In an interview with Jeff Slakey for the IFiber One News Radio Daybreak show, Olympia Mayor Cheryl Selby says city officials are trying to find a second sanctioned camp site that would create a safe place for the homeless campers from under the 4th Avenue bridge.
