OLYMPIA — City of Olympia officials plan on Wednesday to begin cleanup for eventual removal of the unsanctioned 4th Avenue bridge camp.
Official say the homeless camp is in an environmentally sensitive area near the west shore of Budd Bay.
"In April, we took short-term, interim measures to address health and safety concerns related to the camping directly under that bridge,” the City of Olympia stated in a recent newsletter.
Officials recently moved to shrink the number of tents under the bridge, took steps to protect fragile areas of the bridge and placed two portable toilets at the camp site.
But still the camp has grown.
"Activities from the unsanctioned camp have been encroaching on the water and threatening water quality,” officials stated.
Campers were given notice on June 12 that city officials would clean up and remove the site.
"Staff is working with campers to assist in cleaning-up debris and garbage in preparation of the removal,” officials said. "It is important to note that the clean-up does not remove the unsanctioned camping within the limited footprint under the bridge.
