SHELTON — Kevin Schmelzlen and Sharon Trask were leading the pack of primary election hopefuls for Mason County commissioner after the first count of ballots rolled in Tuesday night.

Schmelzlen was ahead in the four-way race for District 3 commissioner race with 1,448 votes, or 40.4 percent.  Trask trailed with 1,090 votes, or 30.41 percent.

Schmelzlen and Trask will advance to the Nov. 6 general election if the vote margin holds.

After the first vote count Tuesday night, 12,897 ballots were counted out of 38,661 registered voters for a turnout of 33.36 percent. The next count of votes is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday with vote certification scheduled Aug. 21. There are an estimated 487 ballots left to count.

Other primary election night results:

• Legislative District 35 Democratic Incumbent Democratic challenger Irene Bowling of Bremerton was leading incumbent Democratic Sen. Tim Sheldon, of Potlatch,  with 4,741 votes, or 38.23 percent, to Sheldon’s 4,342 votes, or 35.01 percent. The two will advance to the general election.

• Legislative District 35 incumbent Rep. Dan Griffey was ahead of Democratic challenger James Thomas with 6,697 votes, or 54 percent to 5,704 votes, or 46 percent.

• Legislative District 35 incumbent Drew MacEwen, R-Union, was leading his Democratic challenger David Daggett by 6,385 votes, or 51.5 percent, to 6,013 votes, or 48.5 percent.

• In the race for Mason County assessor, Melody Peterson was ahead by 6,176 votes, or 52.43 percent, compared to her challenger, Patti McLean with 5,603 votes, or 47.57 percent.

• Mason County Sheriff Casey Salisbury was leading handily with 8,307 votes, or 69.24 percent over his challenger, Darin Holland, with 3,691 votes, or 30.76 percent.

• The races for Mason County auditor, clerk, coroner, treasurer and prosecutor were unchallenged.

• Incumbent George A. Steele was leading in the five-way race for Mason County District Court judge with 3,240 votes, or 31.81 percent, to his next closest challenger, Eric Valley, with 2,633 votes, or 25.85 percent.

• For U.S. Senator, Democratic incumbent Maria Cantwell was leading a pack of more than 20 challengers. Cantwell led the results in Mason County with 5,951 votes, or 48.1 percent. Her next closest challenger was Republican Susan Hutchinson, with 3,521 votes, or 28.46 percent.

• Congressional District 6 Incumbent U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, was far ahead in his three-way race with 73,604 votes, or 64.18 percent, compared to his closest challenger, Douglas Dightman with 37,161 votes, or 32.4% percent.

• In Congressional District 10, incumbent U.S. Rep. Denny Heck, D-Vancouver, was handily leading with 52,667 votes, or 59.73 percent, to his closest challenger, Joseph Brumbles with 27,714 votes, or 31.42 percent.
