OLYMPIA — West Thurston Fire officials say a passing train started several small fires Tuesday afternoon in West Thurston County along old Highway 9 and Highway 12.

Fire officials said the train caused six small fires along a two-mile stretch.

West Thurston firefighters along with DNR firefighters were able to bring all the fires under control in quick time. A DNR helicopter assisted with the fires providing an overhead assessment of the scene.

Fire officials said the train was stopped and secured to allow for fire crews to safely extend hoses under the train cars to reach one spot fire that would have otherwise been inaccessible by road.

“Our crews are working with DNR and the railroad to not only pinpoint the mechanical issue that caused the fire but work to prevent it from occurring in the future,” West Thurston Fire stated in a Facebook post.

No structures were reported threatened in the fires.
