SHELTON — A Shelton man died Wednesday morning in a two-car collision on U.S. Highway 101 near Shelton Matlock Road.

The Washington State Patrol identified the man as Daniel W. Owens, 63.

The state patrol reported that a second motorist, Dawn M. Downer, 47, of Shelton, was injured in the collision and transported to Mason General Hospital by aid.

The state patrol reports that Downer was driving a 2007 Dodge Dakota Pickup on the Shelton Matlock on-ramp onto southbound 101 while Owens was driving northbound in a 1989 Toyota Camry.

The report states that Downer's vehicle attempted to merge onto southbound 101, lost control, crossed into the northbound lane and was struck by Owens vehicle.

Downer's vehicle then went over the guardrail and came to rest on the embankment.

The roadway was blocked three and a half hours while the investigation took place and the scene was cleared.

The state patrol reports that Downer is being charged with speed too fast for conditions. No drugs or alcohol were involved.
