Karin Hilburn

SHELTON — Karen Hilburn, founder of the Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund, has been awarded this year’s Community Impact Award by the Thurston County Chamber, in partnership with the Thurston-Mason County Medical Society.

The Chamber presents four ‘Health Care Champion’ awards annually that include the Health Care Safety Net Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Professional Leadership Award, and Community Impact Award.  They are given in recognition of heroic acts, steadfast dedication, extraordinary service and professionalism that are seen every day in our community’s medical offices, clinics, hospitals, emergency services and related organizations.

The Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund, a chapter of the Mason General Hospital Foundation, helps uninsured or underinsured women with the costs associated with their diagnoses and treatment for breast, cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers.  Available to Mason County residents receiving their treatment at Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics, the Fund also sponsors Health Events hosted by Mason General Hospital, where twice a year it provides free mammograms to 50 women who are without adequate insurance to pay for these screenings. The Karen Hilburn Fund had a record year in 2017 for helping patients in need.

Karen will be honored at the Thurston County Chamber’s 12th annual Health Care Champions event Tuesday at the Olympia Country & Golf Club, 3636 Country Club Rd NW.  The evening event is from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and will include honoree recognition, videos, hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar.  Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased by calling (360) 357-3362 or emailing info@thurstonchamber.com.
