GRAND MOUND — A tanker truck carrying 4,000 gallons of used motor oil overturned early Wednesday morning on Interstate 5 at the Thurston-Lewis county line, closing all northbound lanes of traffic.

Officials say the interstate may be closed all day.

The Washington State Patrol says motor oil leaked from the tanker and spilled about 1,800 gallons onto the freeway. Vehicles driving through the spilled oil after the crash spread it about three miles beyond the scene, according to state state troopers.

The truck driver was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence. The tanker truck overturned at about 4:30 a.m.

A State Department of Ecology hazardous materials team was called in to help clean up the spill and check for environmental impacts.

Northbound traffic is being detoured at Exit 82, using Harrison Avenue and Old Highway 99 SW north to State Route 12 and back to I-5.
