CHEHALIS — Fishing on the Chehalis River and some tributaries in the area closed on Monday and will remain closed through June 30.
Rivers affected include the Chehalis, South Fork Chehalis, North Fork Newaukum, South Fork Newaukum and Skookumchuck River.
Low predicted spring chinook returns prompted the closures. Wildlife officials determined any incidental encounters of spring chinook during game fishing could subject the fish to stress, injury, or death, which during a year of low predicted returns could harm future runs.
The Chehalis River was originally scheduled to open for fishing for gamefish on May 25.
