PORT ORCHARD - Some Mason County residents who have children that attend schools in South Kitsap School District are learning about the resignation of the district’s school board president after her arrest for DUI.
During a school board meeting on Wednesday, Rebecca Diehl resigned from her role as president of the board of directors. Keith Garton has been elected as the board’s president and Greg Wall as vice president.
The Kitsap Sun reports that Diehl was arrested for DUI on April 14 after she was involved in a two-car crash in Pierce County. Diehl reportedly had an initial conviction for DUI in 2016 but was granted a pre-trial diversion and entered into the agreement to avoid a more severe penalty.
The Kitsap Sun mentions that Diehl is still on the board and will stay on probation until 2024.
The following statement was published in a press release emailed to iFIBER ONE News:
“The board met in executive session at our summer work study session on August 3 and again last night to discuss recent events. We considered input from our community and feel the board reorganization is the right thing for South Kitsap School District,” stated President Garton. “While Ms. Diehl is stepping down as president, we look forward to our continued work as a board on behalf of South Kitsap students and staff.”
