THURSTON COUNTY - A Thurston County resident who was the victim of a social security scam on Friday afternoon had thousands of dollars stolen from her bank account.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, the unidentified resident received a phone call from who she believed was the Social Security Administration.

During the phone call, the caller posing as an employee from the Social Security Administration made a reference to the Thurston County Sheriff by telling the resident, "I’m working with John Snaza” or a phrase to that effect.

The caller then advised he was transferring the caller to a Thurston County Sheriff’s Office phone number, which was a real number used by TCSO," the Thurston County Sheriff's Office stated Friday afternoon.

The victim, who believed the caller was from the Social Security Administration, provided bank information to the caller. The sheriff's office said $9,000 was stolen from the resident's bank account.

The Thurston County Sheriff's Office reminded folks the sheriff's office does not receive or collect money for the Social Security Administration.
